Party Nomination
Political Party Nomination
A presidential candidate nominated by a political party may be placed on the general election ballot. The chairperson of the national convention of each political party must certify to the secretary of state immediately following the convention the names of the candidates for president and vice-president. Each political party must certify to the secretary of state the nominees for presidential electors within three days of the state convention, and no later than the 2nd Tuesday in August. A political party is a party whose candidate for governor at the last preceding general election for governor received at lea st 1 percent of the total votes cast for governor. A new political party may be formed by filing with the secretary of state no later than the last Tuesday of March prior to the date of the primary election a written declaration signed by at least 2 ½ percent of the voters in the state as shown by the total vote cast for governor at the last preceding gubernatorial election.
Petition Access
Petition / Independent Candidate Access
An independent presidential candidate may obtain ballot access for the general election by filing with the secretary of state no later than the first Tuesday in August prior to the election a certificate of nomination containing the number of signatures equal to at least 1% of the total combined vote cast for governor at the last certified gubernatorial election. The candidate must file a declaration of candidacy and certify the name of a candidate for vice-president prior to circulation the nominating petition
